The city's history traces back to its founding in 1849, a consequence of the American land acquisition after the Mexican–American War. Culturally rich, Las Cruces hosts annual events celebrating its heritage, including the Harvest Wine Festival, Renaissance ArtsFaire, and the Whole Enchilada Fiesta. The historic downtown area, particularly around Main Street, serves as the cultural epicenter, housing museums, businesses, restaurants, churches, art galleries, and theaters that contribute to the city's dynamic and evolving character.

In addition to its cultural events, Las Cruces boasts many parks, recreation options, and educational institutions. With 87 city parks, 18 tennis courts, and four golf courses, the city offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities.
